WAVE OF SUICIDES HAUNTS CHINESE FACTORY
A suicide epidemic has put Foxconn, a Taiwan-based mobile-handset manufacturer, in the spotlight, writes DI. So far this year, nine workers have died after throwing themselves from buildings on Foxconn facilities. Sony Ericsson and Apple are among Foxconn’s customers, but Gustaf Brusewitz of Sony Ericsson points out that his company works with the Beijing plant, not the Shenzhen facility, which is where all the suicides have occurred. The factory is highly criticized for its sweatshop-like business model, and a group of activists have initiated a global boycott of iPhone and iPad in protest of the working conditions at the facility.
