TECH GADGETS STEAL SALES FROM APPLIANCES, CLOTHES
American consumer spending has shifted more towards electronics than previously, according to government data released Tuesday. Outlays for televisions, computers, video and telephone equipment grew 1.8 percent in the first six months of this year, compared with the first half of pre-recession 2007, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Spending on appliances decreased 3.6 percent and spending on furniture decreased by 11 percent during the same period.
