RULING LETS OWNERS ALTER IPHONE SOFTWARE
The US Copyright Office, a division of the Library of Congress, issued a ruling Monday making it legal to alter iPhones, iPads and iPods to install and run software not purchased from Apple. The ruling, which is an exemption from Digital Millennium Copyright Act, applies to other smartphone makers as well, but only Apple now restricts what apps can run on its devices, writes FT. Referred to as jail breaking, the process of unlocking the operating system of Apple’s devices to gain root access, previously a legal gray area, has now been declared legal for users who wish to run legitimate software. Jennifer Granick, civil liberties director at the digital-rights organization Electronic Freedom Foundation, said the ruling could open the door for third-party app stores. "Innovators now know that there will be customers for them," she says.
