LOCAL CHINA PHONE-MAKERS GAIN GROUND
WSJ reports that Chinese device makers are gaining ground in their domestic market, led by Tianyu with its K-Touch brand. Tianyu held a 7.5-percent share in Q1, shipping roughly 55 million handsets, putting it in third place, behind Nokia and Samsung. Other up-and-coming device makers include Lenovo, Huawei and ZTE.
 
SAMSUNG TO LAUNCH TABLET PC
Samsung plans to introduce an Android-based tablet PC, the Galaxy Tab, which will be released no later than in Q3, according to J.K. Shin, President of Samsung’s mobile division. (Wall Street Journal) in Q3 at the latest
TATA TELESERVICES’ NETWORK FUELS RAPID GROWTH IN INDIA
WSJ reports that Tata Teleservices is enjoying swift growth in the highly competitive Indian telecom sector, and is looking to attain 100 million subscribers in 2010. Deepak Gulati, President of Tata Docomo, says the company’s multi-billion-dollar venture into GSM networks has borne fruit.
APPLE’S NEW IPHONE ANTENNA AIMS TO PUT A HOLD ON DROPPED CALLS
One of the most important new features of the iPhone 4 is a stainless-steel wrap-around antenna, whose main task is to solve the much-lamented problem of lost calls. Dropped calls have been so common with the iPhone that the TV comedy-talk-show titan, Stephen Colbert, recently quipped that the new iPad is exactly like an iPhone 4 because “you can’t make calls with it.”

SPRINT ADJUSTS DATA PLAN

Sprint is next in line to announce data-traffic limits on its customers, writes WSJ. In this case, the limit will apply to mobile laptop users whose accounts will be temporarily suspended if they exceed a certain amount of data usage while roaming.
