QUALCOMM FACES FRESH EU INQUIRY
Qualcomm is facing fresh allegations of anti-competitive business practices, reports FT. The EU Commission is looking at how Qualcomm may be offering incentives to dissuade its customers from making deals with Icera, a UK-based competitor of the chip-making giant. Icera has an advantage over its rivals, which might make its chips for high-speed 3G mobile-device connections both easier and cheaper for hardware makers to use.



UNION PREPARED FOR LENGTHY STRIKE AT BT

Last night, the Communication Workers Union issued a warning that it is ready to implement a prolonged strike if British Telecom fails to meet the workers’ demand for a higher pay increase. The strike would begin in mid-July.
 
FRANCE TELECOM TO JOIN BIDDING FOR FRENCH NEWSPAPER LE MONDE
FT reports that France Telecom has entered the bidding for a controlling stake in the French newspaper, Le Monde. The French telecom operator is looking to secure a position as a major content provider. In recent years, France Telecom has bought the rights to certain HBO series and some elite-level soccer matches.
ONLIVE LAUNCHES “CLOUD GAMING” SERVICE
A Silicon Valley-based start-up, called OnLive, has launched a possibly revolutionary version of online gaming, which it calls “cloud gaming”. The idea is to stream console versions of games online, to tens of thousands of gamers simultaneously, hence ending the need to acquire a gaming console or to purchase the games in stores. Gaming industry representatives are taking a wait-and-see approach, one of their main concerns being potential latency issues, which would obstruct the flow of the games.
