WSJ reports that a little-known company called Amerilink Telecom Corp has in recent months recruited former US congressional leader Richard Gephardt and former World Bank President James Wolfensohn as directors in its effort to address security concerns over Huawei. The Chinese network vendor has hired Amerilink as a consultant and distribution partner. The addition of such influential figures is "very important in terms of the trust factor," said Amerilink founder and Chairman William Owens, who was vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Clinton and a former CEO of Nortel. WSJ writes that Amerilink's strategy involves working with third parties to scrub, deliver and manage telecom equipment made by overseas suppliers such as Huawei to ensure it can't be used by spies or to launch a cyberattack on US infrastructure.
