THE IPHONE 4’S BIGGEST SURPRISE: AN 88-COUNTRY ROLLOUT
When Apple introduced its new iPhone 4, it offered few surprises, one of the most dramatic new features being integrated video-calling, a function which will help Apple maintain its lead over Android-based handsets, writes FT. But the main surprise was that the iPhone 4 will be available in 88 countries as soon as in September. The uncharacteristically rapid rollout is a reflection of how important global sales are becoming for Apple, as iPhone growth may have peaked in the US.
EU HIGH COURT BACKS ROAMING-CHARGE LIMITS
Yesterday, the European Court of Justice upheld the EU-imposed limit on roaming charges, reports FT. The initial ruling had been challenged by a group of major European mobile operators, who were trying to salvage an EUR8.7-billion roaming-charge market.
RELIANCE SELL-OFF TALK ABOUNDS
In a somewhat curt statement, AT&T denied rumors that it is in acquisition talks with Reliance. “In response to news reports, AT&T today said it is not in discussions with Indian wireless company Reliance Communications,” the company said. The announcement that a major stake in Reliance might be for sale has brought lots of activity, with numerous operators emerging as potential buyers, writes FT. Meanwhile, WSJ said entering into the Indian market may represent a two-sided coin: while India is an explosive growth market, profits are dissipating quickly amid intensified competition.
